ABOUT

    Thrive+:

    Museum of Young Art:

    Doron Beuns:
‘’Ilse Kind is a Dutch artist who works across sculpture, installation, drawing, video and collage. In her artistic practice she investigates and uses technological systems that currently (mis)interpet, predict, direct and parasitise our lives. In this system human beings are treated as malleable creatures who experience a simulated and simplified version of reality whilst maintaining the illusion of individual freedom.‘’

Ella Paritsky:‘’Dutch artist Ilse Kind, challenges the simulated reality imposed by technological systems. Luckily for us, we get the chance to see her new sculptures, crafted with the aid of A.I. along with a video exploring the obscured symbiosis at the core of A.I.-generated images. Oh but wait, there more. In another area of the exhibition, Kind confronts us with a video revealing the ways in which hidden surveillance resembles the behaviour of parasites; leaching beneath our skin through biometric algorithms.’’

PERSONAL NOTE

My practice begins in fragile, uncontrollable situations. Coming from a family that survived by blending in, I inherited an instinct to stay unseen. This created a distance to my own body and feelings, and a heightened sensitivity to the natural- and technological systems that watch and control us.

In earlier works I directly inhabited these infrastructures: breaking into surveillance cameras in Pareidolia, collecting targeted ads in Sponsored, and comparing technological devices to parasites in Our Mind as a Host. What first produced fear gradually gave way to empathy, as I started to anthropomorphize them: cameras endlessly repeating the same view like trapped beings; advertisements crawling under the skin, shifting behaviour. By relating such abstractions to the organic world, I create an understanding of what they mean to us.

Today, I carry these mechanisms into material processes. I am drawn to materials that  control,  adapt, grow, or decay in ways I cannot fully predict. Each work develops hands-on, in encounters between the digital and the material, the controlled and the uncontrollable. I see them as interspecies assemblages that ask how, in contemporary life, we exist as both host and resource within the systems that intimately govern us.

For me, meaning emerges when art itself becomes part of a larger ecology: cameras feeding on presence, materials growing and eroding, cables pulsing, viewers observing. Within these entanglements, I look for strategies of survival, ways to adapt to visibility without being consumed, to exist as both host and resource within the systems that govern us.
